Like we discussed in an post earlier in the week, the Mets were very worried with Zack Wheeler, and our fears have been realized. Zack Wheeler will undergo Tommy John Surgery, pending a second opinion, sometime this month. Wheeler was struggling with his control and his velocity, like Josh Edgin, this Spring. Wheeler was going to slot in as the Mets #3 pitcher. He is expect to miss 12-17 months with a full tear of his UCL.
Thoughts from Niko Goutakolis:
As much as I don’t want to say this, the Mets could, potentially, be better off without Wheeler. Gee is somewhat of a better pitcher, as he is more deliberate with his pitches and has more experience. I’d say Wheeler and Gee’s talent level are equal right now, but Wheeler has more potential moving forward, which is why I didn’t want to see Wheeler go down. There is no doubt in my mind that Gee is the correct replacement, however.
