This Date in Mets History: The Grand Slam Single

The date was October 17th 1999, the Mets were in the middle of the NLCS of 1999 versus the Atlanta Braves. The Braves were up 3 games to 1 on the Mets, and everything looked bleak at Shea Stadium. Octavio Dotel had just given up the go-ahead run in the 15th inning. The Mets had loaded the bases in the bottom of the 15th, and Robin Ventura stepped up to the play, and hit a “Grand Slam” Single.

So, basically it’s called the “Grand Slam” Single because he never actually circled all the bases. The Mets got eliminated in Atlanta the next day, but Bobby Valentine’s squad had a lot to be proud of in 1999.
